For our first project in motion graphics, we were tasked with creating a kinetic typography video. I focused on animation and worked in Adobe Animate. This was my first time using the application, and I wanted to see how far I could go. The song I chose to explore in this program is called “Sailor Song” by Gigi Perez. It is a song about slowly losing hope in a same gender relationship due to the ways of society. I incorporated these themes by using illustrations and hand drawing each word, giving it the feel that the narrator is writing it themselves. For more technical aspects, I used a 12 frames-per-second method, and in the beginning, each frame is different until the text appears. After that, every two frames are animated.
Sailor Song
This kinetic typography piece brings Gigi Perez’s Sailor Song to life through delicate, hand-drawn animation that captures the song’s emotional fragility. The flowing, handwritten text feels intimate and vulnerable, as if penned in real time, while the subtle frame variations create a raw, imperfect rhythm that mirrors the heartbreak in the lyrics. The restrained color palette and minimalistic design allow the emotional weight of the words to take center stage, making the piece feel both poignant and personal.
