For this case study, we were tasked with redesigning an album cover, poster, and t-shirt design for an existing album. I chose ‘her’ by JVKE. The album is a single, making an EP that focuses on one song. The lyrics tell a story of a boy falling for a girl and wanting to find her. He didn’t have a purpose until he found her and wished to keep her close. I wanted to portray this story in my poster, album, and t-shirt design.
My idea for this project was to focus on the characters in the song. It is a love story about wanting to find a love that can save you, giving you a sense of purpose.
The Poster is the start of the story. The guy is falling into oblivion, losing hope until he sees someone reaching out. The girl dives towards him, saving him. They are tied by a red string, symbolizing that they will and have always been connected.
The Album shows the aftermath of his saving. They are on the beach, and he watches her, finding peace, and uses his camera to always remember this moment.
The Shirt is that reminder, a polaroid of them holding hands, showcasing their love, along with their string of connection.

Rough draft #1
I nailed the scene I imagined. The black and white color scheme is reminiscent of old photographs and memories, making it nostalgic. I still felt something was missing.
Rough draft #2
The poster showcased the characters diving down, and the emotions are prevalent. However, the feedback I got mentioned that there needed to be some form of texture in the background to give more of a dynamic feel.

I started to incorporate the smaller details and added hatching to give the environment more depth. This is when all of the pieces started coming together and became more cohesive.
