For this project we were tasked with creating a series of three posters relating to the topic of coexistence. I wanted to potray the relationship between the sky, earth, and water while also using the symbolism in origami. Each poster has a character depicted: Crane, the peace. Fox, the courage. Whale, the patience.

The organization that I decided to use is known as The Peace Crane Project. Their message is to give children the opportunity to create empowerment and create change in their youth. Each child writes a message on a crane and trade it with each other around the world in order to spread the idea of peace and friendship.

My idea for this project was to incorporate physical origami with my digital illustrations. Each animal has their own meaning that correlates with the environment they are in.

As stated above, the crane symbolizes peace, meaning the sky above us gives us a sense of calm.

The fox symbolizes courage, just as the ground below us gives us a sturdy foundation, and in case of failure, we can always get back up.

The whale symbolizes patience, pulling from the environment and serenity of the ocean.

Outline draft

For this part of the process, I really wanted to focus on the details of each animal. I felt that it was necessary to include them even though they would be covered with origami because it showed that they were still there and their presence can’t be overshadowed.

Base color

This is when I started to incorporate all the colors for each poster. I wanted to keep that underline base of blue for each one to make them more cohesive and tie in the coexistence element. I made sure that the colors balanced out well and the animals were the main focus of the illustration.

I finished implementing all the colors and details and added the typography. I wanted the typeface to really reinforce the message of coexistence with one another. Each tagline is related to the animal they are paired with, giving more meaning to each poster individually, but also tying them together. The final version will showcase how the posters will look with the added physical origami.
